Charge on N-type and P-type semiconductors

N-type and P-type semiconductors are types of extrinsic semiconductors. In an N-type semiconductor, current conduction is due to holes.
Whereas in a P-type semiconductor,current conduction is by excess free electrons. But you may think that an N-type semiconductor has a net negative charge and a P-type semiconductor has a net excess of free electrons but these extra electrons were supplied by the atoms of donor impurity and each atom of the donor impurity is electrically neutral. The negative charge of these free electrons is balanced by the positive charge of the immobile ions. The electrons and holes generated in pairs due to thermal energy are also balanced by their equal and opposite charge. Thus, the net charge will be zero. The situation with regard to P-type semiconductor is also similar. Therefore, an N-type or a P-type semiconductor is electrically neutral.
