Melexis Expands Pico-Resolver Family with 5V Variant for Compact Motor Applications

Tessenderlo-Ham, Belgium, 1 September 2026 – Melexis introduces the MLX90381 5V, expanding its compact Triaxis® pico-resolver to support a wider range of automotive, alternative mobility and robotics motor applications. Unlike rigid TMR solutions, this new 5V variant delivers unrivaled placement flexibility. This design freedom is exactly what enables engineers to shrink motor sizes without sacrificing accuracy.

As engineers work to make motors smaller, quieter, and more efficient, integrating accurate rotor position sensing into increasingly constrained mechanical systems becomes more challenging. This is particularly demanding in applications where end-of-shaft sensing is not possible, such as through-shaft motors, braking motors, steering motors, e-bike drives, and other compact actuation systems. In these environments, engineers need a position sensing solution that supports flexible placement without adding unnecessary mechanical complexity or PCB space.

To address this need, the MLX90381 5V combines Melexis’ Triaxis® Hall technology with high-speed sine and cosine analog outputs in a compact DFN-6 package. By sensing magnetic flux density in three dimensions and allowing selectable X/Y, X/Z, or Z/Y magnetic axis pairs, the device gives engineers greater freedom to position the sensor relative to the rotating magnet. In side-of-shaft and through-shaft motor designs, this enables the sensor to be placed below or close to the magnetic track rather than requiring additional side space, helping reduce mechanical constraints, simplify PCB placement and ease tolerance management in compact assemblies.

The MLX90381 5V delivers an output refresh rate of 2 µs and can measure rotational speeds of more than 50,000 rpm, making it suitable for precise rotor position detection in DC, BLDC and PMSM motor architectures. Programmable sensitivity and filter bandwidth provide flexibility when optimizing system performance, while I²C communication enables straightforward device configuration and calibration during production.

Housed in a compact DFN-6 package measuring 2.0 mm x 2.5 mm x 1.0 mm, the MLX90381 5V features a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to 160°C, embedded diagnostics, ASIL B SEooC capability and AEC-Q100 qualification, allowing it to support demanding automotive and industrial design requirements.
