New Ruuvi Air enables healthier homes and indoor spaces

The air we breathe indoors is a significant contributor to our mood and comfort, as well as our long-term health and well-being. Yet since we can’t see it, indoor air quality remains a critical wellness blind spot, exposing millions to invisible health risks every day. Ruuvi Air’s continuous indoor air quality monitoring technology makes those invisible threats visible, empowering users with the knowledge to create healthier and safer indoor spaces, bringing the same peace of mind that smart rings and watches bring to physical wellbeing.

RIIHIMÄKI, Finland (September 25th, 2025) Finnish smart sensor technology company Ruuvi has launched Ruuvi Air to address the unseen dangers of poor indoor air quality, which affects daily health and well-being in our homes, workspaces, and indoor environments where we spend 90% of our time. The new device is Ruuvi’s latest all-in-one smart sensor and an addition to the Ruuvi sensor portfolio. Users are empowered with the knowledge to optimise their indoor environments using the same continuous monitoring philosophy that millions apply to measure their steps, heart rate, and sleep patterns, making adjustments and improvements based on data and actionable insights.

Indoor environments can contain pollutant levels two to five times higher than outdoor levels, yet unlike outdoor air quality, air indoors remains largely unmonitored despite its significant impact on daily health. Recognizing the urgency of addressing air quality as a critical human health issue, policymakers have begun taking decisive steps. For example, in October 2024, the European Union (EU) adopted the updated Ambient Air Quality Directive, aimed at safeguarding public health with tighter limits on airborne pollutants. Poor indoor air quality can also trigger several chronic health conditions, like asthma, heart disease, and lung cancer, with young children, the elderly, and those with underlying respiratory health issues at particularly high risk.

Common everyday activities are the main contributors to poor indoor air. For example, cooking with gas, heating with solid fuels like wood or coal, cleaning with chemical products, and smoking. Additionally, everyday household items can contribute to unhealthy indoor air in our homes. Paints, varnishes, air fresheners, aerosol-based cosmetics, chemical off-gassing from furniture and textiles, and even the use of laser printers can release pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM) and harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These include benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, acetone, and styrene.

Opening windows when outdoor particulate matter is high can also significantly worsen indoor air quality. For example, during the widespread wildfires across Europe and North America in 2025, smoke drawn through open windows carried fine airborne toxins into homes, creating hidden indoor health risks for millions of people. Ruuvi Air helps users recognize these high-risk circumstances in real time and provides practical guidance to reduce pollutant exposure, such as alerting when to keep windows closed, when to ventilate, and when filtration or purification is recommended.

“Everyone deserves simple, actionable insights into the air in their homes and workplaces. That’s the opportunity Ruuvi Air unlocks,” says Henri Hakunti, Co-founder and COO at Ruuvi. “By bringing the same helpful clarity people love in wearables to indoor spaces, we make air quality understandable for everyone, empowering families and teams to create truly healthy environments. Many of us just haven’t realized how strongly indoor air shapes daily health and energy, and that’s what we want to change.“

Ruuvi Air’s comprehensive environmental smart sensors transform complex environmental data into actionable insights through continuous monitoring of temperature, air humidity, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds (VOC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM2.5), and air pressure. Ruuvi’s mobile application converts raw sensor data into clear guidance, so anyone can understand and improve their indoor environment without requiring technical expertise. The device is easy to install and functions as an all-in-one, connected smart sensor solution, covering the key environmental parameters relevant to home and personal health.

“At heart, we at Ruuvi are a team of enthusiastic engineers who love designing the best solutions to life’s daily challenges, and making them as simple to use as possible,” says Lauri Jämsä, Founder and CEO at Ruuvi. “Despite the sophisticated sensors, Ruuvi Air is not a complicated gadget. It’s a helpful home companion that’s got your back, day and night. It helps you identify unseen dangers and make the critical changes you need to protect what matters most: your health, family, and home.”

Ruuvi Air’s impact lies in its ability to connect invisible environmental factors to visible improvements in daily life. The device and its accompanying mobile app turn the unknown into understanding, enabling users to identify and address indoor pollution sources before they negatively impact health and well-being. The process is made easy by Ruuvi Indoor Air Quality Score, the company’s own proprietary air quality metric, which gives clear guidance based on a combined score from 0 to 100 representing overall air quality, calculated from weighted inputs from the sensor data. This proactive approach transforms hidden risks into opportunities for small, practical adjustments that can add up to lasting benefits for daily comfort and overall quality of life.

“Most smart home monitoring devices behave like smoke detectors – we only pay attention to them when they alert us to a problem,” Jämsä continues. “With Ruuvi Air, we think differently; by encouraging people to be actively curious about their surroundings and providing the insights they need to make informed decisions, we’re empowering people to take the right actions to improve their living spaces every day. Whether it’s ventilating a room, considering safer materials, or adjusting daily living habits, Ruuvi Air gives families the peace of mind that comes from truly understanding their home environments.”

Pre-sales for Ruuvi Air have now begun, with deliveries starting in October. The device integrates seamlessly with the existing Ruuvi product platform, and it connects to the subscription-free Ruuvi Station mobile app. To date, Ruuvi has delivered its devices to customers in more than 150 countries, all built on a mission of trust, ease of use, and lasting impact towards helping people improve their daily lives using the wisdom of data from the environments around them.
