Ambient Light Sensor – Working & Its Applications

Ambient Light sensors are commonly used to mimic the response of the human eye to ambient light conditions. They are commonly used to adjust the display brightness of a certain device based on the external brightness conditions. For eg, a digital clock may be brighter during the day than at night so that the intensity of light and the two different times are not affected.
The second display may be a monitor such as a computer screen or television that is to be dimmed. Apart from other photovoltaic sensors, they do not have an infrared or second light transmission element used to amplify the elements outside the sensing device. They rely strictly on the light provided by the environment in which they reside, just as the eye does under the same conditions.
Within the light sensor, there is a sensing element that is sensitive to light in some way. Typically, it is a type of diode or photoresistor. Which reacts to light input that can be effectively measured and transmitted. This response is the voltage change in the most discrete element that a controller can detect.

Working of Ambient Light Sensor

An ambient light sensor is a typical version of a photodiode. A photodiode may be a sort of photodetector that’s capable of converting light into voltage or current, counting on the mode of operation. A photodiode is generally a PN junction or pin structure, the figure explains the working principle of a PN photodiode. Lights enter the top of the photodiode, a thin top P-type layer allowing most photons to pass through the depletion region where electron-hole pairs are formed.
Ambient light sensors are used to measure optical energy At specific wavelengths or specific bands of wavelength on the light spectrum. These applications aim to improve the visual experience and make lighting comfortable for the end user.

Ambient-light sensors (ALS) are widely used in smartphones to provide information about the ambient-light level in support of backlight LED power circuits. … it should be capable of proximity detection (to turn off the display when held to the user’s face) as well as core ambient-light measurement functions.
