₹1,980-crore Tiruvallur facility strengthens state’s power electronics and advanced manufacturing ecosystem

Tamil Nadu has secured another strategic electronics manufacturing investment with Japan-based MinebeaMitsumi signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government to establish a precision components and IGBT module manufacturing and R&D facility in Tiruvallur district. The project, involving an investment of about ₹1,980 crore, is expected to create roughly 1,400 skilled jobs and deepen India’s capabilities in advanced power electronics and mobility technologies.

The new facility will focus on high-precision components and insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules — critical semiconductor devices used in electric vehicles, renewable-energy systems, industrial automation and rail traction. By localizing production of these advanced power devices, the project is expected to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce import dependence in key electrification segments.

Strengthening India’s Power Electronics Base

IGBT modules sit at the heart of modern power conversion systems, enabling efficient switching and control of high voltages and currents in EV drivetrains, solar inverters, wind turbines and factory automation equipment. Global demand for such devices is rising rapidly as industries electrify and transition toward energy-efficient systems.

Tamil Nadu officials said the MinebeaMitsumi investment will add advanced packaging and module assembly capabilities to India’s semiconductor ecosystem, complementing ongoing national efforts to build domestic electronics manufacturing and semiconductor value chains. The project includes both manufacturing and R&D functions, signaling a move beyond assembly toward design-linked production and application engineering.

The Tiruvallur location — part of the Chennai industrial corridor — offers proximity to automotive OEMs, electronics manufacturers and export infrastructure, making it a natural hub for power electronics production. Tamil Nadu already hosts a large share of India’s automotive and electronics manufacturing base, and the addition of IGBT module capability reinforces its position in electric mobility supply chains.

Part of Broader Investment Wave

The MinebeaMitsumi project forms part of a wider set of MoUs signed by Tamil Nadu across electronics and aerospace sectors totaling about ₹5,980 crore and projected to create around 8,400 jobs. The agreements underscore the state’s strategy to attract high-technology manufacturing investments spanning semiconductors, components and advanced materials.

Industry observers note that global companies are increasingly expanding manufacturing in India to diversify supply chains and tap the country’s fast-growing domestic market. Power electronics in particular is emerging as a priority segment due to India’s accelerating EV adoption, renewable-energy expansion and industrial automation demand.

Advancing EV and Industrial Ecosystems

For MinebeaMitsumi, the Tamil Nadu facility expands its footprint in India’s mobility and industrial sectors. The company supplies precision mechanical and electronic components used in automotive systems, motors, sensors and semiconductors worldwide. Establishing local IGBT module production positions it closer to major Indian automotive and industrial customers transitioning to electrified platforms.

The project also aligns with India’s broader push for electric mobility and clean energy, where domestic availability of power semiconductors is increasingly strategic. Local production can shorten supply chains, reduce costs and support faster deployment of EVs and renewable infrastructure.

Tamil Nadu’s Manufacturing Momentum

Tamil Nadu has emerged as one of India’s leading destinations for electronics and advanced manufacturing investments, supported by industrial corridors, skilled workforce and policy incentives. The state government has prioritized semiconductor-adjacent sectors such as electronics components, power devices and aerospace manufacturing to build a diversified high-technology base.

With the addition of MinebeaMitsumi’s Tiruvallur plant, Tamil Nadu strengthens its role in the global power electronics value chain while advancing India’s ambition to develop domestic capabilities in critical semiconductor technologies. The investment marks another step in the state’s transition from traditional manufacturing toward next-generation electrification and semiconductor-linked industries.
