The flagship sub-GHz SoCs are ideal for smart cities and long-range IoT

HYDERABAD, India, February 15, 2023 – Silicon Labs, the leader in secure, intelligent wireless technology for a more connected world, today announced that its flagship FG25 sub-GHz SoCs (system on chip) are now available, which are general available through Silicon Labs and its distribution partners. Built to be the flagship SoC for low-power wide area networks (LPWAN) like Wi-SUN and other proprietary sub-GHz protocols, the FG25 SoCs combined a powerful ARM Cortex-M33 processor with the most internal memory of any Silicon Labs’ SoCs. The FG25 is the ideal SoC (system on chip) for long-range, low-power transmissions, capable of broadcasting up to 3km with minimal data loss in dense, urban canyon environments when coupled with the Silicon Labs EFF01 Front End Module. With the deployments to scale to hundreds of thousands of nodes, as well as high security and scalability, making it ideal for smart cities and long-range IoT.

FG25 is also the first SoC in Silicon Labs’ portfolio to support orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulations introduced in Wi-SUN Field Area Network (FAN) 1.1, OFDM supports high data bandwidths of up to 3.6 Mbps, which helps FG25 enable long range, high throughput, and low latency in sub-GHz Wi-SUN applications.

FG25 SoCs have been adopted by many early participating customers around the world, in which Landis+Gyr has upgraded its smart metering applications through the FG25 SoCs and Wi-SUN protocol. As a global leader in energy management, Landis+Gyr integrated Silicon Labs’ EFR32FG12 sub-GHz SoCs into its early smart metering solution, and has achieved great application effect. Now, Landis+Gyr further improves the performance of its smart metering solution by adopting FG25 SoCs. The FG25 makes it possible to use the same form factor as its previous module, so they can easily make existing products Wi-SUN or OFDM capable if necessary. Landis+Gyr can also run its proprietary stack on the FG25, making it possible to transition existing customers that are using proprietary-based communication standards onto Wi-SUN.

In addition, Silicon Labs has been certified by the Wi-SUN Alliance for the PHY layer of the FAN 1.1 profile. Customers can leverage of this certification to lower the burden placed on them as they design Wi-SUN FAN 1.1-complaint devices.
