Securing the Edge: Anti-Counterfeiting and Ultra-Low-Power EEPROMs

  • Interviewee: Amit Sethi, Sr Marketing Manager, STMicroelectronics India

Watch the Interview:

General Overview & Futuristic Outlook

In an era where connected devices proliferate from industrial floors to smart homes, hardware security and ultra-low-power efficiency are paramount. STMicroelectronics addressed these critical design hurdles by showcasing advanced memory and hardware-based security solutions designed to safeguard intellectual property and extend the operational lifespan of battery-powered systems.

Key Product Highlights & Technical Insights

  • SPI-Based Page EEPROM (32 MB): Tailored for battery-powered applications with strict space constraints, this device delivers superior performance compared to traditional flash memory. It offers half a million write cycles of endurance across an extended temperature range of 0°C to 105°C. Operating at an ultra-low voltage of 1.6 V, it achieves read, write, and programming speeds at least twice as fast as flash while consuming roughly 50% less power.
  • ST-SAFE-L Security Element: Built to combat rising counterfeiting and cloning in reusable peripherals (such as printer cartridges and industrial battery packs), the ST-SAFE-L is a compact 3-pin secure element. Utilizing ST’s proprietary ST-1 wire protocol alongside asymmetric digital keys, digital certificates, and a decremental counter, it allows host systems to securely authenticate peripherals and protect brand integrity.

Advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) for Low- and High-Voltage Applications

  • Interviewee: Luigi Di Turi, Marketing Manager for Demand Creation (Analog Subgroup), STMicroelectronics

Watch the Interview:

General Overview & Futuristic Outlook

As industrial applications, two/three-wheelers, and electric vehicles accelerate toward mass electrification, robust and scalable battery management is critical. STMicroelectronics showcased its comprehensive low-voltage and high-voltage BMS solutions designed to optimize battery lifespan, energy density, and safety across diverse operating environments.

Key Product Highlights & Technical Insights

  • Scalable BMS Portfolio: Covering low-end to high-end applications, ST’s lineup includes the L9961 (for 18V–20V home appliances, gardening, and cordless power tools) and the L9962 (up to 36V–40V thresholds) with embedded analog front-ends (AFEs) and integrated current sensing.
  • High-Voltage BESS & EV Solutions: For high-voltage industrial battery energy storage systems (BESS), scooters, and cars, the L9963 and L9965 chipsets support robust ISO-SPI daisy-chaining up to 31 nodes. They integrate precision voltage/current measurement, state-of-charge tracking, and dedicated safety pyrodrivers.
  • Future-Ready Innovations: A preview of upcoming solutions highlights the L9948, specifically developed for 48V electric two- and three-wheeler architectures to manage up to 16 cells with integrated AFE and current sensing.

Transforming Vehicle Electronics: Zonal Architectures, Smart Power Distribution, and eFuses

  • Interviewee: Bipin Pandey, Automotive technical marketing, STMicroelectronics India

Watch the Interview:

General Overview & Futuristic Outlook

The automotive landscape is undergoing a paradigm shift driven by Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) and smart mobility. STMicroelectronics showcased advanced zonal control architectures and smart power distribution methods that streamline vehicle wiring harnesses, enhance fault diagnostics, and elevate functional safety standards.

Key Product Highlights & Technical Insights

  • Dual Power Rail Switching: Demonstrating methods to handle dual power sources securely, managing abuse conditions, and relaying diagnostic telemetry back to the main domain controller.
  • Electronic Fuses (eFuses): Moving past traditional mechanical fuses, ST introduced smart power rail switches and multi-channel eFuses (single, dual, quad, and hex configurations). These deliver ultra-fast response times, diagnostic telemetry, and abuse-condition detection directly reporting to the central Electronic Control Unit (ECU).
  • Zone Control and Intelligent Endpoints: Utilizing ARM-based and PowerPC-core microcontrollers, ST’s zone control ecosystem minimizes wiring complexity. Intelligent endpoints equipped with CAN networking capabilities can drive local loads (such as automotive LEDs) autonomously without requiring dedicated local microcontrollers.

Bringing Intelligence to the Edge: High-Performance STM32 MCUs with Neural Processing

  • Interviewee: Sridhar Ethiraj, Group Manager, Technical Marketing (Microcontrollers), STMicroelectronics India

Watch the Interview:

General Overview & Futuristic Outlook

Edge AI is transforming microcontrollers from simple compute units into intelligent decision-makers. STMicroelectronics highlighted its latest breakthroughs in the STM32 portfolio, marrying ultra-low-power green energy operation with high-performance neural processing capabilities.

Key Product Highlights & Technical Insights

  • STM32N6 with Built-In Neural Processing: Designed for advanced Edge AI applications, the STM32N6 is the first STM32 family featuring an integrated neural processing unit capable of supporting up to 600 GOPs. This processing power enables real-time computer vision tasks—such as pose estimation, facial recognition, gesture/palm detection, and automated number plate recognition (ANPR)—making it ideal for automotive driver monitoring systems (DMS).
  • Ultra-Low-Power Vision AI (STM32U3): Demonstrating sustainability in action, ST showcased a battery-less vision AI system powered entirely by a custom solar panel setup utilizing the ultra-low-power STM32U3 with an integrated hardware AI accelerator.
  • Performance Scaling: Pushing microcontroller boundaries further, ST has scaled performance heights, introducing high-performance MCUs clocking up to 800 MHz—delivering up to six times the processing speed of previous-generation H7 series devices to meet the rigorous demands of modern smart applications.

Powering the AI Revolution: Next-Generation Data Center & Energy Architectures

  • Interviewee: Mohammed Zeya Vase, Group Manager, Technical Marketing & Application at STMicroelectronics, Power and Discrete Devices

General Overview & Futuristic Outlook

The exponential rise of generative AI and hyperscale data centers has triggered an unprecedented demand for high-efficiency power delivery systems. STMicroelectronics presented cutting-edge power supply solutions aligned with Open Rack Version 3 (ORV3) specifications, engineered to minimize thermal dissipation and drastically shrink physical footprints within server racks.

Key Product Highlights & Technical Insights

  • Localized DC-DC Architecture (800V to 50V/12V/6V): Transitioning away from legacy architectures, ST’s advanced power systems convert high-voltage 800V DC inputs directly down to 50V, 12V, or even 6V. By leveraging higher voltages, operating currents are drastically reduced, scaling down copper conductor sizes and minimizing  power losses exponentially.
  • High Power Density & Advanced Materials: Showcasing a 12 kW system boasting an exceptional power density of 2,400 watts per cubic inch, these units integrate specialized magnetics, silicon MOSFETs, and wide-bandgap silicon carbide (SiC) devices.
  • Ecosystem Integration: The power supply units incorporate metrology blocks for real-time power metering, PFC (Power Factor Correction) stages driven by ARM Cortex-M4 microcontrollers, LLC sections utilizing SiC MOSFETs, and advanced analog drivers. Furthermore, to tackle intense thermal challenges in AI servers, ST supports liquid- and chemical-cooling infrastructure with specialized pump and heat-pump control devices.

Reader Takeaway
