Slide switch

It is a bistable two position switch and it is used to current flow in the circuit. It is closed by moving the switch. It can be used to connect two further circuits to an existing one and to connect them optionally. The configuration of single pole double throw (SPDT) is used. The double pole double throw configuration works like two combined single pole double throw configurations.

It is used for the example of smaller circuits such as the main circuit in battery powered electrical devices. The functions parallel to pushbuttons, slide switches usually have a clear structure that accurately indicates the ON and OFF states.

Specification of slide switch

The slide switch includes maximum current rating, maximum AC voltage, maximum DC voltage and maximum mechanical life.

Maximum current rating

It is the amount of current that can run through the switch at one time.  A small amount of resistance between the contacts and because of that resistance all switches are rated for maximum amount of current. The current rating is exceeded and the switch may overheat, causing melting and smoke.

Maximum AC/DC voltage

It is the amount of voltage the switch can safely handle at one time.

Maximum mechanical life

It is the mechanical life expectancy of the switch. A switch electrical life expectancy is less than its mechanical life.

Applications of slide switch

  •   Turn ON and OFF the device in the electronics circuit.
  •   Handheld device
  •   Torch and angle grinder
  •   Wearable electronics
