GigPeak launches 28Gbps PAM4 200Gbps chipset portfolio for short- and long-reach Ethernet datacenter applicationsAt the Optical Fiber Communications conference & exhibition (OFC 2017) in Los Angeles (21-23 March), GigPeak Inc of San Jose, CA, USA – which provides integrated circuits and software solutions for high-speed connectivity and high-quality video compression over the network and the cloud – has launched a complete chipset portfolio for 28Gbps PAM4 200Gbps-based solutions for short-reach (SR) and long-reach (LR) Ethernet applications for inter- and intra-data-center connectivity.

“With an already dominating market share delivering the current generation of 40Gbps active optical cables (AOCs) and transceivers for data-center connectivity, GigPeak is pleased to announce that we have started sampling chipsets for 200Gbps short-reach and long-reach Ethernet applications for inter- and intra-data center connectivity,” says Uday Poosarla, director of datacom marketing. The chipsets comprise 1x and 4x short-reach TIA receivers (HXR14100 and HXR14400), vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) drivers (HXT14100 and HXT14400), 1x and 4x long-reach directly modulated laser (DML) drivers (HXT44100 and HXT44400), complemented by the proven clock & data recovery (CDR) technology represented by the 2x and 4x CDR/re-timer (HXC44200 and HXC44400).

TIA receivers

  • GigPeak’s family of linear TIA receivers comes in single-channel (HXR44100 (LR), HXR14100 (SR)) and quad-channel (HXR44400 (LR), HXR14400 (SR)) configurations.
  • The TIAs share the same architecture that provides 13pA/sqrt(Hz) (LR) and 16pA/sqrt(Hz) (SR) input current noise density at 28GBaud PAM4 throughput with 10-12 bit error rate (BER). AGC and ATC per channel RSSI outputs are provided to enable active alignment during manufacturing to provide optimum performance and manufacturability.
  • The 1MHz I2C interface enables full control of additional functionality such as signal detect and squelch, pre-emphasis, maskable interrupt generation, internal temperature monitor selection, channel polarity inversion, and output voltage swing with enable.
  • The TIAs should sample in May. One of GigPeak’s strategic customers, ColorChip, is showcasing GigPeak’s linear TIA in a 28Gbps Baud PAM4 application in booth 3239 at OFC.

VCSEL drivers

The single-channel VCSEL driver HXT14100 and the quad-channel VCEL driver HXT14400 share an architecture that supports modulation current up to 12mA and average VCSEL current up to 18mA, with a dedicated BURN-IN capability up to 20mA average current. The 1MHz I2C interface enables full control of all driver functions, including input equalization, output peaking, automatic power control, automatic gain control, signal detect and squelch, channel polarity inversion, diagnostics such as average current and temperature monitoring, as well as user-maskable interrupts and VCSEL voltage supervisory functions. The chip integrates the digital diagnostics function as defined in the SFF8472 standard. The VCSEL drivers are sampling now in die form and on an evaluation board with MOU.

At OFC, GigPeak is showcasing the HXT14100 in a live demo in which the laser driver drives transmit optics using 28GB PAM4 modulation.

DML drivers

The HXT44100 and HXT44400 DML drivers share the same architecture with a high level of integration, low power dissipation, and a small form factor. The HXT44100 single-channel driver footprint is sufficiently small to use within a TOSA (TO-can) solution. Both DML drivers support low-voltage supply operation, as low as 2.5V with modulation and bias currents of 50mA and 50mA respectively, enabling the next generation of low-power modules. They can be driven with supply voltages up to 3.3V if higher modulation and bias currents are required. A single channel operating at 2.5V will dissipate about 300mW of chip power. Neither of the two devices requires any external digital-analog convertor (DAC) for operation. The DML drivers are sampling now in die form and will be available in a TOSA form factor for sampling in second-half 2017.

A high level of integration is provided with both the HXT44100 and HXT44400 by incorporating the modulation, bias and pulse-shaping DAC into the devices with an integrated I2C interface for control, monitoring, fault and status detection. The 1MHz I2C interface enables full control of additional functionality such as signal detect and squelch, bandwidth adjust, maskable fault and interrupt generation, internal temperature monitor selection, channel polarity inversion, and programmable CTLE input equalization.

At OFC, GigPeak is showcasing the HXT44100 in a live demo in which the laser driver drives transmit optics using 28GB PAM4 modulation.

CDRs/re-timers

The HXC44200 and HXC44400 CDR/re-timers are based on an analog CTLE-based architecture and are said to have significant advantages over competing digital solutions based on digital sinal processors (DSPs). They come with a 10-tap adaptive linear equalizer and decision feedback equalizer to cover up to 20dB lossy channel. The output de-emphasis for transmit has a 3-tap FFE filter. Advanced features include on-chip testability, eye monitoring, and a PRBS generator and checker. The CDRs are expected to sample in June.
