Longsight Custody Suite will be equipped with QPS201 security scanners from Rohde & Schwarz with the intention to reduce the need for strip searches. Longsight is the first custody suite in England to feature a security scanner with high-resolution milimeter wave technology. The security scanner will improve operational efficiency, strengthen search procedures and support ongoing improvements, with a particular focus on the treatment of women and girls.

The QPS201 will be used as an additional screening step to check whether detainees may be concealing prohibited objects.

The QPS201 will be used as an additional screening step to check whether detainees may be concealing items such as weapons, drugs or other prohibited objects. The contactless scan is safe, fast and designed to protect privacy. Instead of generating images of the person being scanned, the system displays any potential threat on a standardised digital avatar. Millimeter wave technology can detect metallic and non-metallic objects concealed under clothing, including liquids and powders. The waves penetrate clothing but are reflected by the skin and are harmless to body tissue. The scanner’s automated image analysis distinguishes between everyday items, such as buttons or zippers, and potential threats.

This targeted approach can reduce the need for more intrusive searches, support detainee dignity and improve safety for custody staff. By combining advanced detection, automated analysis and privacy-focused screening, the R&S QPS201 supports more efficient and respectful custody search procedures.
