The sensor which has the effect of piezoelectric then that sensor works on the piezoelectric sensor. So this piezo term is a Greek term that means pressing or squeezing. Piezoelectricity is the presence of an electrical potential across the side of the crystal when mechanical stress is applied by pressing or squeezing. This sensor is used to measure the effect of change in pressure, temperature, acceleration, main stress or strain, or force by converting them to electric charge.

Principle operation mode

When a force is applied to a side’s piezoelectric material, an electric charge is generated across the faces of the crystal. So this generated voltage is directly proportional to the applied force or pressure. There is also an inverse piezoelectric effect where applying voltage can cause the material to change it dimension.

In a working system, the crystal acts like a battery with a positive charge on one face and a negative charge on the opposite sides. Make sure to complete the circuit these both faces should be connected so that the current should flow through it.

For example, the gas burner lighter utilizes the piezoelectric effect. It produces an electric pulse due to pressure developed by the sudden impact of the trigger over the material inside.

Characteristic of piezoelectric sensor

  • It has high strength.
  • High voltage output.
  • Elastic compliance.
  • Wide frequency response.
  • High mechanical strength and stability.

Disadvantages

  • It is not suitable for measurement in static conditions.
  • It is affected by temperature.
  • The output is low without an external circuit attached to it.
  • It is very difficult to give the desired shape to this material and also strength if the change occurs.

Application

  • In a microwave, the sound pressure is converted I into an electric signal and this signal is ultimately amplified to produce a louder sound.
  • Automobile seat belt lock in response to a rapid deceleration is also done using a piezoelectric material.
  • It can be used for the study of high-speed shock waves and blast waves.
  • It is used in infertility treatment.
  • It is used in inkjet printers also. etc.
