Kids Show Off Big Ideas at Annual STEM Fest

STMicroelectronics concluded its 5th annual STEM programme with a campus-wide showcase on July 11. The initiative aims to foster innovation, hands-on learning, and technical problem-solving among young students, with the core objective of empowering them to apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts to develop practical, real-world solutions.

STMicroelectronics’ Greater Noida campus turned into a science fair, a robotics lab, and a design studio all at once, as the company hosted the fifth edition of its “STEM Your Way” programme. The day-long event, themed “Inspiring the Next Gen,” brought together more than 70 children of ST employees, spanning Grades 3 through 12, to present projects built over two months of hands-on workshops in electronics, circuits, geometry, and embedded systems.

Branded backdrops declaring “Revolutionizing Technology” and “Future Engineers” greeted visitors at the entrance, setting the tone for a showcase positioned as a long-term investment in academic and career readiness rather than a one-day celebration. ST’s global STEM philosophy, “Innovation depends on you,” ran through banners across the venue, reflecting the company’s broader push to build early competence and confidence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among the next generation.

Day on the Floor

By mid-morning, the venue had settled into the rhythm of a working exhibition. Tables numbered and signed like conference booths lined the atrium, each fronted by a feature-and-component poster and, often, a laptop or monitor looping a live demo. Groups of students in STEM Your Way caps moved between stations, comparing notes and testing each other’s builds, while employees paused to ask questions about design choices as readily as they admired the finished product. At one table, a green-felt football pitch hosted a small two-wheeled robot dribbling a yellow ball toward a miniature goal, its LEDs signalling every score. A few steps away, a paper airplane rigged with an STM32 board and an accelerometer tilted in a student’s hands while a monitor beside it mirrored the motion on a 3D flight-path grid in real time, the “Tilt2Fly” build.

From Posters to Prototypes

For younger participants in Grades 3 to 5, the emphasis was on visual storytelling. A wall of hand-drawn posters organised by grade and theme, including “Eco-Friendly Electronics,” “Futuristic Electronic Products,” and “Math in Motion,” showed students translating classroom concepts into illustrations of green cities, solar-powered devices, and recycling systems. One standout entry, the “Light Police Siren,” built by a team of four young students, used a photoresistor, a slide switch, and a music IC to create a circuit producing a siren sound when light on the sensor changes. Its simplicity was its strength: a single core circuit that doubled as an accessible introduction to sensors and audio electronics for its creators and for the younger visitors who gathered around to test it.

Older students pushed into more technically demanding territory. Team RoboMinds presented “FloraSense32,” a smart plant assistant that reads light, moisture, and temperature levels and flashes alerts when a plant needs attention, complete with a hand-drawn flowchart mapping out its decision logic from sensor readings to LCD display. The Tilt2Fly team, whose paper-airplane rig drew a crowd earlier in the morning, positioned their build as a potential training aid for pilots flying through low-visibility conditions.

Senior Projects Show Engineering Depth

The Grade 9-12 category revealed the depth that two months of mentored work can produce. A team built a 6-DOF bionic hand around an STM32L476RG microcontroller, implementing closed-loop control through flex-sensor feedback, PIDF tuning, and PWM-driven DC motors for precise finger movement, a platform framed as relevant to prosthetics, robotics, and remote operation in hazardous environments. Serial logs displayed alongside the hand showed the handshake between two microcontrollers over UART, evidence of the debugging effort behind it. The matte 3D-printed hand, wired to a bench power supply, curled its fingers on command as onlookers tested different grips, drawing a steady crowd through the afternoon.

Elsewhere, a team built a Robotic Teach Pendant using the STM32H747I-DISCO dual-core platform, combining FreeRTOS, a TouchGFX touchscreen interface, industrial Ethernet, and micro-ROS communication with the ROS 2 framework to control a simulated robotic arm in Gazebo. Four screens ran simultaneous simulations, an ackermann-steered car circling a test track and a robotic arm sorting objects on a factory floor, giving visitors a rare look at how industrial automation is taught and tested.

A third team, mentored by an ST engineer, built “ST Carpool,” a Flutter-based ride-sharing app for STMicroelectronics employees supporting OTP-based authentication, real-time route visualisation, and a carbon-footprint dashboard, backed by FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and Ola Maps APIs. A looping screen recording walked visitors through the sign-up and ride-matching flow, complete with a company leaderboard rewarding the greenest commuters. Nearby, another group demonstrated a real-time face recognition and enrolment system and an AI-based resume profiling tool, rounding out a lineup that moved fluidly between embedded hardware, cloud services, and applied AI.

Highlights From the Floor

Video coverage of the day captured the texture that photographs alone could not: the hum of overlapping conversations, students explaining their circuits to employees twice their age, and small crowds forming wherever a demo moved or lit up. The paper airplane at the Tilt2Fly table was passed from hand to hand as visitors tilted it to watch the on-screen model bank and dive in response, and the football-pitch robot’s goal-scoring routine drew repeat requests for another run.

Senior leadership turned out in force as well, a signal of how seriously ST treats the programme: STMicroelectronics’ Managing Director Mr. Anand Kumar made his way through every booth on the floor, visibly enthusiastic as he engaged with each team’s build.

Closing remarks came from Dr. Manoj Kumar, Director of Innovation and Scouting at STMicroelectronics, who addressed the gathered students and parents as the event wound down, a fitting bookend to a day built around ST’s own engineers mentoring the company’s next generation of talent.

Building a STEM Pipeline

ST employees, several wearing STEM Your Way caps and lanyards, moved between tables through the day, questioning teams about their design choices as much as their finished demos. The format mirrored a technical conference more than a school fair, with numbered tables, feature-and-component signage, and mentor names credited alongside each team, giving the students a taste of how engineering work gets reviewed professionally.

For STMicroelectronics, the fifth edition of STEM Your Way reinforces a consistent message: sustained, mentored exposure to real hardware and tools, rather than one-off demonstrations, is what builds durable interest in engineering. With projects this year ranging from a light-activated siren built by young students to a dual-microcontroller bionic hand, the programme’s five-year arc suggests that the pipeline the company is building in Greater Noida is beginning to show its range.
