Every technology revolution eventually outgrows the infrastructure built to support it. The semiconductor industry is now at one such inflection point—and for India, the timing is particularly significant.

Chips are no longer just components. They are the intelligence layer powering AI, autonomous vehicles, 5G, satellites, and critical infrastructure. As chips become more complex, with analog, digital, RF, and power functions integrated onto a single device, traditional testing approaches are no longer sufficient.

Validation can no longer happen in silos. Engineers increasingly need to understand how these domains interact—for instance, how power fluctuations affect RF performance or how digital noise impacts analog signals.

For India, this is both a technological and strategic opportunity. As investments in fabrication and OSAT facilities build the country’s semiconductor ecosystem, advanced testing capabilities will be equally critical. India’s ability to test and validate the chips it manufactures will play a key role in determining whether it can compete at the forefront of the global semiconductor supply chain.

The Semiconductor Industry Is Entering a New Era

Semiconductors no longer just power smartphones and laptops — they’re the foundation of industries being reshaped worldwide. AI and high-performance computing could account for more than half of global semiconductor demand by 2030 (Reuters), while 5G is driving demand for RF and mixed-signal chips, and autonomous vehicles depend on advanced chips for ADAS, radar, sensors, and real-time processing.

India is central to this shift. Its semiconductor market, worth nearly USD 52 billion in 2024, is projected to exceed USD 100 billion by 2030 (PIB), driven by the India Semiconductor Mission and a growing electronics and AI ecosystem. A flagship milestone: India’s first commercial semiconductor fab, in Dholera, Gujarat, led by Tata Electronics with Powerchip (PSMC) and ASML, will manufacture chips for automotive, AI, communication, and consumer applications (Reuters). Alongside fabrication, India’s OSAT and testing ecosystem is strengthening fast — widely seen as one of its strongest near-term opportunities, given the country’s engineering talent and manufacturing base.

Advanced Technologies Are Creating New Testing Challenges

As semiconductors grow more sophisticated, traditional testing can’t keep up. 5G and satellite communication need highly accurate RF measurements with minimal distortion; System-on-Chip designs now combine analog, digital, RF, and power on a single chip, adding complexity. AI accelerators and HPC applications require validating high-speed data transfer, thermal performance, and power efficiency—critical in automotive electronics, where reliability affects safety directly. India’s growing EV ecosystem adds further demand, since EVs need significantly more semiconductor content than conventional vehicles, especially in battery management and power electronics (IMARC Group).

This complexity extends to software and data: engineering teams manage expanding test-program libraries, coordinate automation across multiple stations, and process far more test data than legacy systems were built for. Keeping test software maintainable and data pipelines scalable is now as critical to outcomes as measurement accuracy itself — meaning testing environments must be both precise and flexible enough to adapt to changing architectures and faster innovation cycles.

Adaptable Testing Systems Are Becoming Essential

Modern test systems must support multiple device types, frequencies, and standards without major hardware redesigns — making modular architectures increasingly valuable for fast reconfiguration. Automation is equally critical: in high-volume manufacturing, automated and multi-site testing improves throughput, reduces error, and lowers cost.

Advanced analytics and real-time visualization are transforming testing further, helping identify anomalies faster, optimize yield, and support predictive maintenance. AI is now also part of testing itself — not just a driver of chip demand — with machine learning flagging anomalies earlier, spotting yield-affecting patterns across large datasets, and freeing engineers from manual data review, turning testing into a faster feedback loop rather than a bottleneck. For India, investing in future-ready testing infrastructure will be essential to compete in global supply chains.

Testing Will Shape India’s Semiconductor Growth Story

India’s semiconductor ambitions go beyond manufacturing—the goal is a full ecosystem spanning design, fabrication, packaging, testing, and innovation. As it grows, testing organizations will be critical to ensuring quality, reliability, and compliance with global standards; semiconductor testing is no longer a validation step but a strategic enabler of innovation.

With strong policy support, rising investment, and a growing tech ecosystem, India is well-positioned to become a major semiconductor hub — but only with equal focus on advanced testing capabilities. In the semiconductor revolution, success depends not just on building advanced chips, but on ensuring they perform reliably throughout their lifecycle.
